Email and Postal Mail
As a Franklin student, you will have your own Franklin email address. You are expected to check that email address every day, as staff and faculty members use those addresses to send you important information.Ìý
Students living on campus will have their own on-campus mailboxes. Wireless and ethernet internet access across campus help you stay connected. Students can access their email on any of the computers in the library or campus computer labs, and they may use their personal computers through our ethernet or wireless networks.
Our campus-wide wireless network covers all campus buildings, and individual ethernet access points are available in all our residences.
Any mail that is posted to a student in care of Franklin Switzerland will be placed in the student's on-campus mailbox.ÌýLetters and packages may only be sent to Via Ponte Tresa 29 and will be available for retrieval during Reception's regular hours.ÌýParcels that are too large for a student's mailbox are held at the Reception desk.
There is a "Posticino" (a small postal service point that also performs other functions) across the street from campus and sells boxes, envelopes, and stamps. Swiss post offices also serve as banks in some ways, and local bills may be paid there.

Some students research international plans for their phone carrier in their home countries and prefer to use their own number to make and receive calls.
Some students prefer to get a Swiss mobile phone or a SIM card that can be used with one's own mobile phone. If you choose to get a SIM card here, be sure your phone is unlocked so it is not limited to your home carrier service and that you can change SIM cards.ÌýSome students now activate a travel eSIM before departure or a Swiss eSIM on arrival; check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
Once students' permits have been issued, they are eligible for a contract phone plan. Note, however, that contract plans are often multi-year, and there are very specific steps to follow if one would like to end the contract. Students have had to pay significant amounts of money in ongoing fees because they neglected to understand the terms of the contracts they signed and did not follow the steps necessary to cancel them.Ìý
There are several providers in Lugano –ÌýÌýtoÌýcompare mobile phone plansÌýand costs. It’s a good idea to get a pre-paid package due to the high disconnection fee for ending a contract early. Please note that, if you would like to get a mobile phone plan,Ìýyou will need to wait until your Swiss permit has been processed and delivered. This process is managed by the cantonal immigration office and may take several months, depending on a variety of factors that Franklin cannot control.
